QUETTA: A shutter down and wheel jam strike was observed in different parts of the province on Wednesday on the third death anniversary of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti.

Three persons were killed and five others, including police personnel, sustained injuries in separate incidents of firing and a motorcycle bomb blast while various electricity installations were blown up.

The link of Balochistan remained suspended with the rest of the country as the transporters did not ply their buses on different highways, including the Quetta-Dalbandin-Taftan highway, Quetta-Mastung-Kalat-Khuzdar-Karachi RCD highway and Quetta-Sibi-DM Jamali national highway. The road service connecting Quetta to interior Balochistan was also suspended.

Main shopping centres and business concerns remained closed on a call of the shutter down strike given by the Baloch National Front (BNF) and the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) and supported by different nationalists and political parties of the province.

The wheel was also jammed in different parts of the provincial capital. However, in some areas, traffic plied as per routine, but below normal. Three persons were shot dead and three others sustained injuries at the Natha Singh street when unknown armed men opened fire on them. The deceased were identified as Shehzad, Muhammad Naveed and Abdul Rauf. Police said unknown armed men opened fire on them and fled.

In another subversive act, an explosive device planted by some unknown miscreants in a motorbike in the by-pass area went off with a big bang causing injuries to three police personnel, including Shamsullah, Watan Khan, Irshad and a passer-by identified as Mukhtar Ahmed.

Similarly, unknown assailants blew up the transmission lines in Sui, Turbat, Kohlu and Quetta suspending power supply to the areas acquiring electricity from the respective feeders. In another subversive act, some unknown miscreants hurled a hand grenade in the office of the Excise Department in Rakhni area of Barkhan district, which exploded with a big bang, damaging the vehicle parked there.

Personnel of different law-enforcement agencies, including the Frontier Corps (FC), Police and the Balochistan Constabulary had been deployed in different parts of the metropolis to avert any untoward incident.

Reports reaching here from interior Balochistan said the wheel jam and shutter down was also observed in Khuzdar, Kharan, Sibi, Dalbandin, Nokandi, Kalat, Mastung, Noshki, Naseerabad, Jaffarabad, Mach, Bolan, Panjgur, and other areas.
